Is a Bigger Barbie a Better Barbie?

Posted on: January 3rd, 2014 by Amy

barbieSeems one of America’s favorite dolls is making headlines again. A digitally-altered image of an obese Barbie doll was recently posted on Plus Size Modeling’s Facebook page, and not everybody is happy about it. Read the full article and comments here before starting your discussion.

Some people think the plus-sized Barbie is a good idea because it’s more realistic. Others think it’s a bad idea because it’s unhealthy and  encourages obesity. What do you think?

How do you think our society treats people who are overweight?

Has anyone ever made fun of you for being too big or too small or too ‘anything’? If yes, what did  you say to them – or what would you want to say to them?

‘…A person’s shape does not change his/her heart.’ wrote one person on Twitter in response to the plus-sized Barbie. What does this statement mean to you? Does it make you think of anyone in your life?

Do you think people should be held responsible for their obesity? Or do you think it’s beyond their control? Explain your answer.

If you could design a new Barbie with a positive message for kids, what would she be like?
