Stocking Up

This list was adapted from Ramona Hamblin’s fabulous cookbook just cook here’s how. You don’t have to go out and buy one of each item on the list. Use what works for your family, add fresh fruits and veggies, some of your own “must-buy” items and voila! Instant shopping list.

  • Canned tomatoes: crushed, ground, peeled, diced, stewed, sauce, paste

  • Dried or canned beans: lentils, lima, navy, black, chickpeas

  • Pasta: (white or whole wheat) angel hair, penne, elbows, small shells, orzo

  • Canned vegetables: corn, green beans

  • Tuna: solid white in water, Italian chunk light in olive oil

  • Grains: rice pilaf, rice (white, brown, or wild), couscous, barley, quinoa, oatmeal

  • Oil: olive, vegetable, canola

  • Vinegar: cider, white, red wine, white wine, balsamic

  • Baking supplies: flour (white or whole wheat), white sugar, brown sugar, honey, baking soda, baking powder, vanilla, cornmeal

  • Spices: salt, pepper, crushed red pepper, paprika, dill, parsley, oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, curry, nutmeg, bay leaves

  • Condiments: olives, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickles, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, hot sauce, soy sauce, salsa

  • Bouillon cubes OR No-salt added stock: chicken, beef, vegetable

  • Canned soups: just in case you need a quick, hearty meal!

  • Peanut butter or other nut butters

  • Garlic, onions, potatoes

  • In the fridge: milk, butter, a block of cheese, large eggs

  • In the freezer: peas, spinach, berries
