You did it! Four weeks of family dinners. Maybe some went better than others. Maybe some went terrifically wrong. But you’ve had some good nights together, and some things have changed for the better. That’s real change that can stick around if you keep it up.
Now it’s time to think about the goals you set a month ago. Take a look at your Goal Sheet. Have you met some? Have you missed some? Have you changed your mind about any? Family dinner isn’t about getting it right; it’s about heading in the right direction.
More than anything, you are making an effort at talking and listening. The traditions you’ve begun together will become the stories you will remember when children are grown and gone and raising children of their own. It’s the story of who you are together, and it’s what everyone who joins your family — grandchildren, partners, friends, neighbors — will become part of when they have dinner with you.
The best part about the story is that it doesn’t end. Do you still have other goals you want to meet? Pick up the 4-week family dinner program and start it all over again. You know what you’re doing now, and you’re getting better as you go.
Finally, don’t forget to share. You can tell your family’s story or learn about other families’ stories on our Family Blog. Connect with other families who are also working on improving their family dinners. Your discoveries and ideas might help other people find their way to more food, fun and meaningful conversation together.
