A Teacher’s Greatest Lesson

Posted on: October 30th, 2014 by Amy

ClassroomAlexis Wiggins, a 15-year teaching veteran, went “undercover” as a student recently, shadowing high school students over the course of two days. Read this article to find out exactly what Alexis did—and more importantly, what she learned. Then choose from the questions below to spark a meaningful conversation at the table tonight!

  • If someone shadowed you for a day, what’s one thing that might surprise him or her about your day?
  • Would you want to go “undercover” as a teacher for a day? What do you think it would be like?
  • If you could go “undercover” as anything or anyone else, what/who would you choose? Why?
  • Alexis notes “students sit all day and sitting is exhausting.” How much time do you spend sitting every day? Do you have suggestions for how to change the way you learn?
  • Alexis also describes her experience of “passively absorbing information” as a student. Does school ever feel that way to you? Why or why not?
  • “I felt like a nuisance all day,” Alexis says. What do you think she means by this? Can you relate to this? Why or why not?
  • Talk about an “eye-opening” experience like this one from your own life. What happened? How did it change your thoughts or feelings about something?
