The Family Dinner Project

Fixer Upper

There’s a saying, “no good deed goes unpunished.” But it’s just not true. Take this case from Pendleton, Oregon. Some thoughtless teenagers made fun of the condition of a man’s house. Their insults were loud enough for the homeowner to hear. However, they were also loud enough for Josh Cyganik to hear. Rather than admonish the boys for their rude behavior, he decided to show the man a kindness.

Share the story with your family, then ask these questions:

  1. Have you ever observed something as mean-spirited as what these boys did? For example, someone making fun of another person’s clothes or their looks? Did you do something about it? If not, what could you have done?
  2. Is there someone in your neighborhood who might need some help? They probably won’t ask. But maybe there’s a lawn that needs mowing or a fence that needs painting?
  3. Who among your friends do you think would help you help someone else?
  4. Did you ever need help? Did someone ask or offer to help you?
