Highs and Lows

Posted on: August 2nd, 2016 by Bri DeRosa

michelleobamaAmong the constant and varied political stories and soundbites that have been swirling in the media as a result of both the RNC and DNC in the past few weeks, one quote in particular caught our attention. Knowing that many families are watching the proceedings together, and that kids in particular are absorbing a barrage of messages, we were intrigued when the First Lady said this:

“Our motto is, when they go low, we go high.”

What does that mean? What could it look like in everyday life? Watch the First Lady’s remarks here, then talk about her words with your family:

  • What do you think it means to go high when someone else goes low? Can you give an example?
  • Is it easier to “go low” in response to a bully, or to “go high?” Why?
  • If our family had a motto, what do you think it would be?
  • Do you think our society and culture encourage more “going low,” or “going high?”
  • Can you think of some new ways you might “go high” the next time you’re faced with a tough situation?
